Our canteen is open MONDAY, WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY from 8:30 am to 1:15 pm.
The NWPS canteen is a healthy choice canteen. We adhere to the “Fresh Tastes Strategy” issued by the NSW Government. All canteens in New South Wales should be adhering to this strategy which provides very strict guidelines regarding the items of food and drink that we are allowed to offer.
As well as items available normally, there are “specials” available for recess and lunch each day. Please refer to the menu – these specials can only be ordered on their respective days.
Lunch must be ordered by 9:00 am.
Please supply paper bags, one bag for food and a separate bag for a drink, with your child’s NAME, CLASS, ORDER and PRICE written on the lower half of the bag, this allows the top of the bag to be folded down to secure the contents without obscuring the writing.
If possible please provide the correct money. The total should be recorded on the bag under the order together with the amount enclosed in the bag. Please also record any change that is due. If you find you’re all out of bags at home – don’t panic! – we sell bags for 10c each.
Ordered lunches are delivered to the classroom by the Class Canteen Monitors who will be appointed by the classroom teacher.
If your child receives an incorrect lunch item (e.g. Strawberry milk instead of Chocolate), or there is something missing from their order, please encourage them to come to the canteen straight away and let us know so we can fix the problem.
If your child forgets their lunch or recess, loses their lunch money, or has a mishap with the lunch they brought from home (e.g a drink leaks into a sandwich) please encourage them to see their teacher. The teacher will bring your child to the canteen and we will provide a basic lunch (e.g. sandwich, drink, fruit). A credit note will be sent home for the items provided. Please send money owed to the canteen on the next canteen day.
Please do not order for recess, there is no need as during recess students line up at the serving windows to choose from the food and drinks available.
Kindergarten Canteen Orientation
Kindergarten classes will be brought to the canteen by their teachers during their first week of classes. Ordering, lining up etc. will be clearly explained. There is a dedicated Kindergarten line at the far left serving window of the Canteen which ensures that our newest students can feel confident coming to the canteen during recess and lunch without having to compete with all those ginormous primary kids!
Allergies/Special dietary needs
If your child has any food allergies, food intolerances or other special dietary requirements please advise the canteen supervisor as soon as possible. A plan of action tailored to your child’s needs will be developed and an information sheet posted in the canteen so that all people working there can be made aware of potential issues.
The canteen is run by a volunteer committee of parents which employs a canteen supervisor who is present at all canteen days. The canteen is staffed by a roster of volunteers from the school community who undertake to fill one shift per month. There are 2 shifts per day: 8:30 – 11:30am and 11:00am – 2:00pm. Two volunteers are required for each shift on a Monday and Wednesday, and four volunteers per shift are needed on Fridays.
Working in the Canteen is not hard – if you can make a sandwich, boil an egg, make a cup of tea and enjoy a chat and a good laugh, then you are almost over-qualified as that’s about as difficult as it gets!
